After nearly two months of not running I finally decided enough was enough. I could probably give you every excuse in the book why I haven’t been running but in the end the results are still the same. I am paying the prices of not working out. I am not only stressed but I am not content with the way I look and feel physically. I have only been on two runs since I have started back and the rebuilding process is slow…but sure. I went on a run around Lake Calhoun and was suprisingly able to finish the whole run at a decent tempo.

Yesterday I did my first tempo run. Althought, I must admit that I still do not have a very good grasp on what a “tempo” run is exactly. I got a new running watch to I was able to track my time and I ran the three miles in about 30 seconds faster than my usual pace of 10 minutes / mile but I’m still not convinced that I did the tempo run correctly. Either way though, the important part is that I got the run in. Next week I am suppose to do a 35 minute tempo run. Hopefully I will figure out exactly what that means before then! guess I need to do a little research!!

AH! I still can’t believe it, but on Saturday I ran the longest I may have ever ran in my life, which I know compared to some it not far, but I ran 7 miles! Shanna, Jill and I ran around both Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet to make a loop of 7 miles, longer than my 10K! I’m not going to lie, it was really hard to me to keep running the whole way. There were so many times when I just wanted to walk but having two other people with me helped me to stay motivated. They were also really pacient with me because even though they could have completed it in a faster time, they kept pace with me the whole way.

The most amazing part of the run was the last 1/2 mile or so. I finally found a groove and I don’t know if it’s because I knew I was almost done or what but my body was just going through the motions with ease. It wasn’t strenious or challenging to keep going, I was just doing it without thinking about it. I guess thats what they mean when they say its just a mental game. I was even able to pick it up and sprint the last bit. The run was so motivating though. I now know that my body is physically able to complete the 10K. I just need to keep working on training my mind!

My first hill run was down east river road behind Coffman Union, up the hill and left on Harvard. I then cut by the rec and went over until 5th street, went up my second hill and finished down 15th street, finishing strong up one last night before turning onto Rollins and finishing my run. I did the run solo, which made it harder for me to run at faster paces, but I didn’t cheat and walk, which made me proud of myself.

I have been running for almost 3.5 years now, but I have yet to take my running abilities past novalist and into training. However, this year will be my last year of college (I started running my first year) and I have made a personal goal with myself that I would complete a marathon before graduation. This goal in mind, I decided I will start now and take the little steps until I can complete the big goal (running in a marathon this coming May - Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN).

So, in proccess of working up to being able to run a marathon, I am running my first 10K race on September 28th. I am just starting my training and the race is 5 1/2 weeks away! I feel like I am moderate physical fitness but I am still nervous that this will not be enough time to properly train for the 10k race.
